Bloomberg News Viewer Steals Bitcoin Directly From Host Though the TV

While the Dogecoin Christmas Day hack garnered more attention than this Bitcoin theft because the thief made away with over $12,00. This theft is on a much smaller scale, and it is actually bit funny.

During an on-air segment about Bitcoin security a Bloomberg news anchor presented a Bitcoin gift certificate to his two co-anchors as a Christmas gift. What happened next will go down as a lesson on what not to do on live television in this digital age. One of the anchors held the gift certificate up in front of the camera and he held it there for nearly 10 seconds. The issue was he left the barcode clearly visible allowing it to be scanned directly off the TV, transferring the funds to the person that scanned the QR code.

The true Identity of the person that scanned the code is unknown, but after the theft a Reddit user under the handle “milywaymasta” took to Reddit to tell the world about his theft.

“The guy that is hosting the series gave bitcoin gift certificates to the other two hosts. One of them opens up the certificate to reveal QR code of the private key,” he wrote. ”They then proceeded to show a close-up of the QR code in glorious HD for about 10 seconds. Hilarious.”

“I took it, it was only $20 worth. It was exhilarating nevertheless. I’ll send it back once Matt gives me a new address since someone else can sweep the old one. A segment on bitcoin security and the importance of NOT showing the private key and also BIP0038 (Password Encrypted Private Keys) Wallets will be more than enough compensation.”

The Redditer that stole the Bitcoin offered to give the money back to the new anchor, but he replied in kind: “So freaking classic but also a GREAT lesson in bitcoin security!” he wrote. “You can keep the $20 – well earned.”
