Man Throws out Hard Drive with 7.5 Million Dollars Worth of Bitcoins

Somewhere in a landfill in the U.K. buried under tons of rubble is a hard drive with 7.5 million dollars’ worth of Bitcoins. The hard drive belonged to one James Howells, an IT worker who bought 7500 Bitcoins a few years ago when they were worth next to nothing that he stored on a hard drive in a virtual wallet.

Since the time he purchased the coins he upgraded his computer and placed the hard drive with the Bitcoins in a desk drawer. In an unfortunate turn of events though he threw out the computer hard drive without even thinking about the virtual currency stored on it.

“I kept the hard drive in a drawer in my office for three years without a second thought – totally forgot about Bitcoin all together. I had been distracted by family life and moving house. Fast forward to 2013 which is when I had a clear out of my old IT equipment – I hadn’t used this drive for over three years, I believed I’d taken everything off it… so it got thrown in the bin.”

James did try to retrieve the drive, but the management at the landfill said the 7.5 million dollar hard drive could be buried under as much as five feet of garbage. I am sure that isn’t stopping some people from looking for it though!

This is an actual picture of the landfill taken by James Howells.
