Warner Bros. Lost Perhaps $109 – $218 Million On ‘The Hobbit’ To Pirated Downloads
TorrentFreak today released its list of most pirated movies of 2013 and the Warner Bros. (WB) film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey topped the list. The total losses to studios remains murky as we can only estimate whether these pirates would have paid to see the film in the theater (estimated at $13) or waited for the home video release (estimated at $13) or paid for both. If the pirates who downloaded ‘The Hobbit’ would have paid to see it in the theater or bought the video release, it would amount to about $109 million in lost revenue. If the pirates would have paid to both see the movie in the theater and bought the video release WB would be looking at about $218 million in lost revenue. As expected most of the films are of the action/adventure variety with the notable exception of Silver Linings Playbook which likely stood out due to the adorable Jennifer Lawrence.
